Steelers – Crocodiles 05.06.2022

Kuopio Steelers otti kolmannen voittonsa Vaahteraliigassa ja jatkaa ainoana puhtaan pelin joukkueena sarjassa. Sunnuntain 42-21 (21-7) tappio oli Seinäjoki Crododilesille seuran liigahistorian sadas.

Kuopion Väinölänniemellä pelattiin hyvätasoinen vaahteraliigakamppailu, jossa Crocodiles lähti tosissaan haastamaan mestareita. Seinäjokiset saivat ensimmäistä kertaa kentälle täyden jenkkimiehityksensä sekä Jaska Värisen, mutta joukkue ei onnistunut pysäyttämään maagisessa vireessä ollutta Le’Anthony Reasnoveria .Yhdysvaltalainen viimeisteli pelissä peräti viisi touchdownia ja eteni pallon kanssa juoksuillaan 270 jaardia. Crocodilesin Christian Powell onnistui TD:n teossa kahdesti, mutta jäi jaardeissa alle sataan (70y).

Steelers-puolustus otti Crocodilesilta juoksuaseen pois, joten pelinrakentaja Zachary Whitehead laittoi palloa eteenpäin ilmateitse.  14/22 onnistuneella heitolla Whitehead keräsi 182 jaardia ja yhden TD:n. Ahkerimpina kiinniottajina olivat Anttoni Lampivuo ja Joel Särkelä neljällä kopilla mieheen. Crocojen ainoan kiinniottomaalin viimeisteli komealla suorituksellaan Janne Särkelä.

Kuopio Steelersin hyökkäyslinja onnistui pitämään Crocodilesin kovan linjakolmikon Filip Zacok, Seth Zins, Emmit Gooden kurissa, eikä pelinrakentaja Joey Bradleytä säkitetty pelissä kertaakaan. Painetta pelinrakentajalla oli kuitenkin sen verran, että 17 heitosta ainoastaan kuusi löysi perille laiturien hyppysiin. Kaikki Steelersin maalit syntyivät juoksupeleillä. Pohjola Vakutuksen ottelun Vakuuttavimmaksi Pelaajaksi valitun viiden maalin Reasnoverin lisäksi Tino Ndongo onnistui TD:n teossa kertaalleen.

Kuopiolaispuolustuksessa yksi nimi nousi korkealle muiden edelle ainakin taklaustilastojen puolesta. Yhdysvaltalainen Colby Campbell on ollut erinomainen löytö joukkueelle ja sunnuntaina miehen tilastosarake karttui 9 taklauksella.

Steelers pelasi hyvän pelin ja siksi olikin kummallista, että mentaalipuolella joukkue sortui isoihin virheisiin.  Peräti 11 rangaistuksella kuopiolaisia työnnettiin taaksepäin 113 jaardia ja Wolverines-pelin sankari, Ikeem Allen komennettiin suihkuun huitaistuaan pelin jälkeen vastustajan pelaajaa päähän.

Ottelun historiallinen kohokohta Vaahteraliigan – ei välttämättä crocojen näkökulmasta, oli seinäjokisten sadas tappio vaahteraliigassa. Aiemmin sataan tai enempään vaahteraliigatappioon ovat yltäneet Turku Trojans (148 tappiota), Porvoon Butchers (141 tappiota) ja Vantaan TAFT (118 tappiota).

Crocodilesin pelit jatkuvat jo ensi perjantaina, jolloin Seinäjoen  Wirokit Stadionilla vastaan asettuu Roosters Helsingistä.  Steelers matkustaa lauantaina Porvooseen Butchersin vieraaksi.

Kuopio Steelers ja Seinäjoki Crocodiles ovat Vaahteraliigan ainoat ilman tappiota pelaavat joukkueet kaudella 2022.  Sunnuntaina jompikumpi saa tappiosarakkeeseensa ensimmäisen merkinnän.

Kuopion Väinölänniemi on tullut kiusallisen tutuksi pelipaikaksi Crocodilesille.  Viime kaudella joukkue vieraili Kuopiossa kolmasti, ja yhtä monta kertaa paluumatkalle lähdettiin tappion kanssa.  Steelers ja Crocodiles ovat kohdanneet toisensa viimeisten neljä kauden aikana yhdeksän kertaa ja vain kertaalleen Crocodiles on onnistunut kaatamaan savolaisvastustajansa. Näistä lähtökohdista peliin lähdettäessä kotijoukkue Steelers on ennakkosuosikki ja Crocodilesilla on uhkana kärsiä vaahteraliigahistoriansa sadas tappio.

Steelers on aloittanut kautensa vakuuttavasti.  Kuopiolaiset ovat kohdanneet kaksi liigasssa korkealle povattua joukkuetta ja voittanut molemmat helsinkiläisryhmät selvin lukemin.  Viikon takainen puolustusten taistelu osoitti kuitenkin, että Steelers on pysäytettävissä, mikäli samassa ottelussa vastustaja saa puolustuksen ohella myös hyökkäyksen vauhtiin.

Steelers marssittaa sunnuntain peliin liigan parhaalla etenemiskeskiarvolla suorittaneen keskushyökkääjän sekä parhaalla heittoprosentilla pelanneen pelinrakentajan. Le’Anthony Reasnoverin etenemiskeskiarvo on tasan 100 jaardia ja Joey Bradley on toistaiseksi ainoa yli 60 % tarkkuudella peleissä heittänyt pelinrakentaja.  Bradleyn tuloksekkaimmat laiturit ovat olleen satakiloisten sarjassa painivat Iiro-Pekka Paakki sekä  Ville Lindsten, joiden lyhyille juoksukuvioille ei ole vielä löytynyt pysäyttäjää. Puolustuksessa edellisen pelin vakuuttavimmin pelannut Ikeem Allen aikoo ottaa torstain pelissä käsistään viedyn liigan säkkikuninkaan tittelin takaisin haltuunsa.

Crocodilesin puolustuslinjan trio antaa näytteen tasostaan

Sunnuntain pelissä Crocodiles tulee marssittamaan kentälle pelottavan kovan linjamiestrion.  Keskeltä linjaa moukaroiva Filip Zacok saa rinnalleen yhdysvaltalaiset Seth Zinsin sekä Emmit Goodenin. Molemmat jenkkivahvistukset ovat kentällä nyt ensimmäistä kertaa, ja mielenkiinto Crocodiles-trion suorituskykyä kohtaan on kova.

Crocodiles on pelannut vasta yhden pelin, joten crokohyökkäyksen suoritusta on vielä vaikea arvioda. Maaliin saakka pallon saatu vietyä vasta kertaalleen.  Christian Powell eteni avausottelussa joukkueensa suurimmat juoksujaardit (94y) ja Joel Särkelä oli kiinniottajista tuloksekkain 104 jaardilla ja yhdellä TD:llä.  Toistaiseksi joukkueen paras pistemies on Eetu Mäki-Maunus kolmella potkumaalillaan.  Sunnuntaina seinäjokisten hyökkäys joutuu kovimpaan mahdolliseen testiin kohdatessaan viime viikolla Wolverines-hyökkäyksen nollanneen Steelers-muurin.

Vaahteraliigan neljännen viikon kamppailu Kuopio Steelers – Seinäjoki Crocodiles pelataan sunnuntaina 5. kesäkuuta Kuopion Väinölänniemellä.  Ottelu potkaistaan käyntiin 16.30.
