Steelers – Butchers 19.08.2022

Kuopio Steelers otti kauden 11. voittonsa perjantaina Väinölänniemellä.  Porvoo Butchers oli merkityksettömässä sarjaottelussa vastaantulija taipuen lopulta lukemin 63-7 (42-7).

Kuopio Steelers lähti peliin tilanteessa, jossa runkosarjan voitto oli jo varmistettu ja jäljellä olevilla kahdella runkosarjapelillä ei ole vaikutusta sarjatilanteeseen. Päävalmentaja Pekka Utriainen myönsikin, että tilanne on vaikuttanut viikon harjoitusten tunnelmaan, kun tarkoituksena on ainoastaan hoitaa peli kunnialla pois alta.

Butchers lähti perjantain peliin kauden kapeimmalla rosterilla eikä helteisen vitostien pitkät ruuhkat helpottaneet porvoolaisten ryhmittymistä kauden viimeiseen vierasotteluun.

Steelers aloitti pelin vahvasti ja punnersi pallon maaliin heti ensimmäisellä hyökkäysvuorollaan.  Tuukka Lehtosen kauden kahdeksas touchdown syntyi kuuden jaardin juoksupelillä. Kuopiolaiset pysäyttivät Butchersin ensimmäisen hyökkäys-draivin alkujaardeille Peter Lundströmin napattua Brandon Gwinnerin heitosta syötönkatkon. Myös toinen kotijoukkueen hyökkäysvuoro päätyi maalialueelle Pelinrakentaja Joey Bradelyn löydettyä Santeri Juvosen vapaana maalialueelta. TD oli Juvosen kauden toinen. Ottelun ensimmäinen neljännes päättyi lukemiin 14-0.

Ottelun toisella neljänneksellä Steelers nakutti taululle neljä touchdownia lisää. Maaleja tehtailivat Jaakko Paananen ja Tuukka Lehtonen kertaalleen sekä Le’Anthony Reasnover kahdesti. Reasnover nosti kauden touchdowniensa määärn jo lukemaan 29, jolla mies on Vaahteraliigatilaston kärjessä selkeällä erolla Crocojen Cristian Powelliin, jolla on ennen lauantain peliä 19 tehtyä maalia. Steelersin Markus Ojainväli potkaisi joukkueensa kaikki yhdeksän lisäpistettä onnistuneesti haarukkaan.

Butchersin ainoan touchdownin viimeisteli tuttuun tapaan pelinrakentaja Gwinner 11 jaardin juoksullaan.

Pelinrakentaja Taivassalolle ensimmäinen TD

Yksi kotiyleisön kohokohdista oli Steelersin kakkos-QB Mikael Taivassalon uran ensimmäinen heitetty touchdown.  Päävalmentaja Utriainen laittoi vuonna 2002 syntyneen Taivassalon kehiin ottelun viimeisellä neljänneksellä ja nuori pelinrakentaja löysi 24 jaardin pelillä ottelun toisen TD:nsä tehneen Santeri Juvosen vapaana. Kaikkiaan Steelersin pelinrakentajat onnistuivat pelissä hienosti. Joey Bradley heitti pelissä lopulta neljä touchdownia ja nousi samalla liigan pelinrakentajien TD-tilaston jaetulle kärkipaikalle 24 heitetyllä maalilla yhdessä Crocojen Zachary Whiteheadin ja Wolverinesin Jabari Harrisin kanssa.

Timi Nuikka matkalla taklauskuninkaaksi

Perjantain peli oli porvoolaisille vaikea. Joukkue menetti pelin ensimmäisellä puoliskolla jo alun perin kapeasta miehistöstään keskushyökkääjä Seth Rowlandin ja puolustuslinjan Jesse Vuoksenturjan, joten pelisuunnitelman rakentaminen vaikeutui molemmin puolin palloa.  Keskushyökkääjänä ottelun lopun pelasi Anthony Figueroa joka onnistui 11 juoksuyrityksellään keräämään pelissä 33 jaardia. Pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinnerilläkään ei ollut parhaita päiviään perjantaina. Kaksi yhdysvaltalaisen heitoista päätyi Steelersin Peter Lundströmin hyppysiin ja kokonaisjaardit jäivät alle sataan. Positiivisena tilastomerkintänä Gwinnerin kauden 12. juoksu-TD.

Butchersin Mikko Seppänen vahvisti otettaan kauden kotimaisen etenijäkuninkaan Ari Tuuli Trophyyn keräämällä pelissä komeat 211 all purpose-jaardia. Myös toinen porvoolaispelaaja on matkalla kohden Vaahteraliigan parhaan pelaajan palkintoa. Butchers puolustuksen Timi Nuikka oli jälleen kerran ottelun tehokkain taklaaja 9,5 pysäytyksellään. Taklaukset nostivat miehen kausisaldon jo lukemaan 81, jolla Nuikka on koko sarjan tilastossa kärkipaikalla ohittaen Crusadersin Nolan Corpeningin, johon nyt etumatkaa 5,5 taklausta ennen kauden päätöspelejä. Kotimaisista taklaajista toisena olevalla Roostersin Taavi Aronpäällä on kasassa 66,6 taklausta ennen kahta viimeistä peliä. Taistelu parhaan taklaajan Matti Lindholm-trophystä huipentuu kauden viimeisiin peleihin.

Butchers saa Vaahteraliigan viimeisellä pelikierroksella vieraakseen Crocodilesin Seinäjoelta lauantai-pelissä 27.8.  Steelers päättää runkosarjansa kohtaamalla arkkivihollisensa Helsinki Roostersin Vänärillä perjantaina 26.8.

Kuopio Steelers saa vastaansa Porvoon Butchersin perjantai-illan vaahteraliigakamppailussa. Molempien joukkueiden sarjasijoitukset ovat jo lukittuina, mutta Steelers tavoittelee historiansa ensimmäistä puhdasta kauttaan eikä sijaa jarruttelulle ole.

Steelers on matkalla seuran ensimmäistä puhdasta vaahteraliigakauttaan.  Esteinä tappiottomalle kaudelle ovat enää Porvoon Butchers ja Helsinki Roosters, jotka asettuvat kuopiolaisia vastaan sarjan kahdella viimeisellä kierroksella. Molemmat pelit pelataan Steelersin kotiareenalla Väinölänniemellä, joka tilastollisesti on paha paikka vastustajille.

Butchers on varmistanut sarjan viidennen sijan, mutta haluaa pelata täysillä loppuun saakka. Joukkueen nuori runko on osoittanut kauden aikana omaavansa potentiaalia tulevien vuosien menestykseen ja perjantaina painetaan päätyyn saakka pelin merkityksettömyydestä huolimatta.

Perjantain ottelu lukitsee samalla Steelersin mestaruudesta taistelevan rosterin lopulliseen muotoonsa. Välieräpeleihin osallistumisen ehtona on pelaaminen kahdessa runkosarjan ottelussa, ja viimeinen hetki uusien pelaajien esittelylle on nyt.  Steelers ehti jo täydentää Lehtosten veljes-trion valmiiksi edelliseen otteluun, eikä Butchers otteluun ole odotettavissa enää uusia täydennyksiä.

Porvoolaiset lähtevät peliin pitkän poissaolijoiden listan varjostamana. Kuopion bussiin eivät ole nousemassa mm. Ville Kurvinen ja Luukas Eerola. Porvoon kunniaa puolustamassa on perjantaina kuitenkin 30 pelaajan kokoonpano, joista 13 syntymävuosi on 2000-luvun puolella.

Mikko Seppänen matkalla seitsemänteen Ari Tuuli-trophyynsä

Uskomatonta, mutta totta. Porvoon Butchersin Mikko Seppänen on jälleen kerran matkalla parhaan suomalaisetenijän Ari Tuuli-Trophyn voittajaksi. Kun kaksi sarjakierrosta on pelaamatta, Seppänen on kirkkaassa johdossa suomalaispelaajien ”all purpose-jaardien” taulukossa. Porvoolaisikoni on kerännyt kymmenessä pelaamassaan pelissä 967 jaardia, joista 708 kiinniotoilla.  Tuhannen jaardin raja ylittynee perjantaina Vänärillä.

Alkukaudesta Seppäsen ykkösasemaa pääsi uhkaamaan tiukimmin niin ikään porvoolainen Luukas Eerola, mutta pelaajien ero on venähtänyt 175 jaardiin, eikä Eerola ole mukana Kuopiossa. Kolmantena suomalaispelaajista on Eaglesin Sampo Viinamäki, mutta kotkalaisen ero Seppäseen on jo 225 jaardia, eikä Viinamäki pelaa Eaglesin kauden päättävässä Wolverines-pelissä torstaina.

Kaikista pelaajista eniten jaardeja kauden 2022 liigassa on kerännyt Steelersin Le’Anthony Reasnover, jolla on ennen perjantain peliä kasassa 1720 edettyä jaardia.

Trophy Wanted!

Mikko Seppänen on voittanut Ari Tuuli-Trophyn aiemmin vuosina 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 ja 2021.  Edellinen ei-Seppänen palkinnon saajana on Kimi Linnainmaa, jolle huomiointi myönnettiin kaudella 2015.  Alkuperäinen legendaarisen Ari Tuulen ikuiseen kiertoon luovuttama komea kannu on ollut jo vuosia teillä tietämättömillä. Jos lajin parista löytyy tietoa mihin varastoon palkinto on unohtunut pölyttymään, olisi hienoa päästä luovuttamaan originaali miehelle, joka todennäköisesti sen jo seitsemänteen kertaan tulee ansaitsemaan.

Vaahteraliigan 14. viikon ottelu Steelers – Butchers pelataan perjantaina 19.8. Kuopion Väinöläniemellä.. Joukkueiden edellinen kohtaaminen Porvoossa päättyi Steelersin selkeään voittoon lukemin 20–47.
