Wolverines-Crusaders 25.07.2021

Helsinki Wolverines ylsi kauden toiseen voittoon kotiottelussaan United Newland Crusadersia vastaan. Suuria muutoksia kokenut joukkue pelasi pelkistettyä jenkkifutista ja riisui vastustajaltaan sen pahimmat aseet pois. Lopputulos Velodromilla 14-6 (7-0).

Wolverinesin lähtökohdat otteluun eivät olleet siitä parhaasta päästä. Joukkueen valmennustiimistä poistui viikon aikana kolme henkilöä ja joukkueen kovatasoinen keskushyökkääjä Breon Allenin vamma osoittautui niin pahaksi, että miehen kausi on ilmeisesti ohitse. Myös Crusadersin hyökkäyskalustoon ilmoitettiin merkittävä muutos kalkkiviikoilla aloittavan laitahyökkääjän paikalla pelaavan kanadalaisen Jonell Tolbertin joutuessa jäämään pois pelaavasta kokoonpanosta.

Wolverines lähti puolustamaan vastustajan juoksua pois ja onnistui

Wolverines päävalmentaja Michael Mattingly kertoi peliä edeltävässä haastattelussa puolustuksen keskittyvän ottamaan pois Crusadersin Kam Harrisin juoksun. Yhdysvaltalaiskeskushyökkääjä sai ottelussa juoksutilastoihinsa ainoastaan 21 jaardia, kun miehen aiempien otteluiden ottelukohtainen keskiarvo on ollut 112. Kaikkiaan Wolverines puolustus pelasi aggressiivisesti ja piti vastustajan pelinrakentajan heittopelin hyvin kurissa varsinkin ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliajalla. Eniten taklauksia Wolvoista keräsivät Curtis Slater (7,0 kpl), Willy Lindfors (6,5 kpl) ja Benjamin Egbidiwe (5,0).

Ensimmäisen ottelunsa pelannut Rufail Khalifa pääsi hyvin mukaan pelin rytmiin ja toisella laidalla kulmapuolustajana pelannut Dejion Lynch pimitti Crusadersin ykköslaituri Finn Kearnsin jäännösjaardeille.

Kotijoukkueen hyökkäyspeli oli sunnuntaina varsin juoksupainotteista. Ottelun vakuuttavimpana pelaajana palkittu Joonatan El Ouacef sai hyvää tukea hyökkäyslinjaltaan ja eteni pallon kanssa 111 jaardia ja juoksi yhden touchdownin.. Pelinrakentaja Jordan Williams ei saanut heittopeliään rytmiin laituriensa kanssa, mutta osoitti nopeuttaa rikkinäisissä peleissä keräten jaardeja yhteensä 98. Huonona uutisena Wolverinesille erinomaiseen vireeseen päässyt laituri Phung Nguyen loukkaantui pelissä pahasti eikä todennäköisesti pelaa enää tällä kaudella.

Ottelun toisella puoliskolla sattui dramaattinen tilanne, jossa Curtis Slaterin maaliin palauttama rähmäyksen poiminta vihellettiin pois ennenaikaisesti. Onneksi tiukka ottelu ei ottelu ei lopulta rakennut tuohon erheeseen.

Robert Johnson lämpeni vasta toisella puoliajalla

Crusaders-hyökkäyksen sydän, Robert Johnson ei saanut joukkueensa hyökkäyspeliä toimimaan ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliskolla. Ainoastaan viiden jaardin heittokertymä ottelun ensimmäisellä neljänneksellä on jotain, jota Johnsonilta on nähty harvoin Suomessa. Toisella puoliajalla Kam Harris otti muutaman suuren kiinnioton, joista lyhyin yksi jaardinen tuotti joukkueen ainoa TD:n.

Crusaders esitteli ottelussa uuden unkarilaisen takapuolustajansa. 20-vuotias Zoltan Golita osoitti pelissä nopeutensa ja oli hyvin mukana tilanteissa. Joukkueen ahkerin taklaaja oli jälleen kerran Michael Hall, joka saalisti Velodromilla muhkeat 14 taklausta. Takapuolustaja Karri Salonen pelasi vahvan pelin ja onnistui kertaalleen katkaisemaan pelinrakentaja Williamsin heiton.

Kuka joutuu Vaahteraliigan putoajan paikalle?

Crusaders (0–4) on pelannut nyt puolet sarjan pelistään ja metsästää yhä ensimmäistä voittoaan. Joukkueen sarjapaikan kannalta elintärkeä peli tullaan pelaamaan Wasa Royalsia vastaan elokuussa. Pahanenteisesti pelipäiväksi on seuloutunut perjantai 13. Tulevalla viikolla Crusders matkustaa Seinäjoelle Crocodilesin vieraaksi (Crocodiles-Crusaders la 31.07.)

Wolverinesille (2-4) voitto poisti pahimmat putoamispeikot painajaisistaan ja joukkue pitää edelleen ohutta mahdollisuutta playoff-paikkaan elossa. Menestyminen Vaahteraliigassa edellyttäisi todennäköisesti paikkaavien vahvistusten värväämistä kauden viimeisiin peleihin (Royals, Roosters). Joukkueen kaikki kolme kauden alussa suojaamaa pelaajaa eivät ole mukana loppukauden pelaavassa kokoonpanossa (Saunders, Allen, Johnson).

Helsinki Wolverines kohtaa toistamiseen sarjanousija Crusadersin kotikentällään Velodromilla. Joukkueiden edellinen kohtaaminen päättyi viimeisen minuutin ratkaisuun Wolverinesin hyväksi 27-22 (8-8).

Sunnuntain taisteluparin kesäkuinen peli oli yksi kuluvan kauden jännittävimmistä. Wolverines kiri Crusadersin ohitse viimeisen minuutin kahdella touchdownilla, joiden väliin mahtui helsinkiläisten onnistunut onside-aloituspotku. Lohjalaiset ovat edelleen ilman avausvoittoa ja saapuvat Velodromille nälkäisinä.

Rufail Khalifan paluu liigakentille

Viime kauden finalisti Helsinki Wolverinesin kausi ei ole sujunut alkuperäisen suunnitelman mukaan. Harjoituskauden pelinrakentajaongelmat ovat jatkuneet erilaisina haasteina joukkueen ulkomaalaisvahvistusten kanssa. Peräti kaikki kolme seuran ennen kautta suojattujen pelaajien listalle sijoittamaa urheilijaa (Mavin Sounders, Breon Allen, Cedric Johnson) ovat poissa kokoonpanosta ja lisäksi joukkueen takakentän yhdysvaltalainen tähtipelaaja Dajion Lynchin osallistuminen peliin on epävarmaa. Wolverinesilla olisi sääntöjen mukaan mahdollisuus korvata suojatut pelaajansa korvaavilla ilman karensseja, mutta toistaiseksi ainoastaan pelinrakentajan paikalle on tuotu uusi pelaaja.

Pelaajahaasteiden lisäksi muutokset valmennustiimissä eivät ainakaan ole helpottaneet joukkueen valmistautuista tärkeään peliin.

Wolverines lähtee sunnuntain peliin yhtä viikkoa kokeneemman pelinrakentajansa Jordan Williamsin johdolla. Hyvänä uutisena joukkue esittelee puolustuksen takakentälle kovan Rufail Khalifan, joka on pelannut alkukauden Puolan sarjassa. Khalifan lisäys heittopuolustusmiehistöön on vapauttanut päävalmentaja Michael Mattinglyn siirtämään Eric Irvinen safetyn paikalta tukimieheksi. Myös laitahyökkääjä Niko Kantonen palaa hyökkäykseen kahden pelin lomansa jälkeen.

Crusadersille tuore unkarilainen safety

United Newland Crusadersin yllätys sunnuntain peliin on nuori unkarilainen takapuolustaja Zolita Goltan. 20-vuotia unkarilainen on pelannut aiemmin Unkarin sarjassa BC Cowbelssissa ja Tsekin liigassa Ostrava Steelersissa safetyn paikalla.

Lohjalaiset lähtevät peliin edellisen pelin viimeisen minuutin tappiosta sisuuntuneena. Joukkue hakee edelleen ensimmäistä voittoaan Vaahteraliigassa ja tietää, että sunnuntaina tuon ottaminen on mahdollista. Päävalmentaja Tuomas Heikkinen kertoo seuran verkkosivuilla miehistönsä olevan nyt valmiimpi taistelemaan voitosta Velolla.

-Toinen kerta Velolla Wolverinesia vastaan. Uskon, että jännittämistä on nyt meidän riveissämme vähemmän. Viimeksi pysyttiin hiukan tuurillakin mukana eka puoliaika ja lopulta oltiin hyvällä taistelulla harmittavan lähellä voittoa.
