Steelers–Royals 31.05.2018

Torstain ottelussa Kuopiossa tehtiin yhteensä 81 pistettä, kun Kuopio Steelers otti kauden toisen voittonsa kaatamalla Wasa Royalsin lukemin 48–33 (21–12). Steelersin hyökkäyksen ykköstykki oli jälleen laitahyökkääjä Charles Wort, joka teki Seth Petersin heitoista neljä touchdownia.

Ensimmäinen neljännes pelattiin lähes kokonaan Royalsin kenttäpäädyssä. Vaikka Wort kaksi touchdownia tekikin, olisi Steelersillä ollut paikkoja iskeä enemmänkin pisteitä. Royals sai avauserässä aikaiseksi yhden hyvän hyökkäysvuoron ja sen päätteeksi Justin Williams teki Royalsin kavennuksen.

Toisella neljänneksellä nähtiin kummaltakin joukkueelta yksi touchdown. Aku Uotila juoksi uransa ensimmäisen Vaahteraliiga-osuman lähietäisyydeltä ja läheltä osui toistamiseen myös Williams. Puoliajalla ottelu oli tilanteessa 21–12.

Tauon jälkeen pistetehtailu jatkui entistä kiivaampana. Uotila teki toisen osumansa ja Wort onnistui vielä kahdesti ja yhden osuman teki Justin Bell, joka esiintyi torstaina yllättävänkin paljon hyökkäyksessä. Markus Ojainväli potki ottelussa kuusi lisäpistettä.

Royalsin puolelta maalintekijöiden nimilista oli huomattavasti yksipuoleisempi. Williams nimittäin teki kaikki joukkueensa maalit – yhteensä viisi kappaletta. Denny John teki Isaac Fisherin heitosta kahden pisteen arvoisen lisäpisteen ja lisäksi Jere Byman haarukoitti yhden lisäpistepotkun.

Steelers ei ollut missään vaiheessa häviöllä eikä avausmaalin jälkeen peli ollut myöskään tasoissa kertaakaan. Kautta aikain ensimmäinen Kuopiossa pelattu Vaahteraliiga-ottelu päättyi Steelersin 16 pisteen voittoon 48–33.

Kumpikaan joukkueista ei selvinnyt ottelusta ilman virheitä – muun muassa rähmäyksiä nähtiin molemmilta taistelun osapuolelta. Jenkkifutis on kuitenkin loppujen lopuksi aluevaltauspeli, ja siinä taistelussa Steelers oli torstaina parempi. Suuressa roolissa tuossa olivat erikoisjoukkueet, joissa sekä Bell että Wort palauttivat palloja hyvin. Lisäksi Steelersin hyökkäsi tasaisemmin. Royalsin hyökkäysvuorot olivat mallia joko tai –eli joko vaasalaiset etenivät sujuvasti aina maaliin asti tai sitten hyökkäysvuoro kulki ainoastaan taaksepäin.

Steelers-sankarit:

Steelersin hyökkäyksessä suurimmat sankarit löytyvät maalintekijäsarakkeesta. Wort on aloittanut kautensa tekemällä kahdessa ottelussa seitsemän touchdownia. Torstaina Wortin maalin syntyivät pääasiassa Royalsin jenkkipuolustaja Kurtis Ovesenia vastaan (ja avauspelissä Saintsin Elliott Jeffcoatia vastaan). Wort otti kaiken kaikkiaan viisi kiinniottoa, joista siis neljä johti maaliin. Peters esitti varsinkin kolmannella neljänneksellä uroteon välttäen useammankin Royalsin puolustajan säkitysyrityksen ja linkoamalla lopulta Wortille pallon maaliin. Kyseisessä tilanteessa Steelersillä oli neljäs yritys ja sillä oli edettävä 25 jaardin matka aina maaliin asti. Jälkikäteen ajateltuna tuo peli käänsi henkisen tilan lopullisesti Steelersille. Kokonaisuutena Petersin heittojen onnistumisprosentti (13 onnistutta, 30 yrityksestä eli 43 %) jäi kauas niistä lukemista, jota Petersiltä on totuttu näkemään.

Puolustuksen puolella 12 taklausta kerännyt Donavan Hayden pelasi erinomaisen ottelun. Hayden pelasi nyt tukimiehen paikalla ja juoksupuolustamisen lisäksi oli antoi useita kertoja painetta Royals-pelinrakentaja Fisherille.

Muista Steelersin pelaajista mainitsemisen arvoisia ovat blokkaava keskushyökkääjä Ville Lindsten, joka hoiti tonttinsa tilanraivaajana hyvin, mutta myös koppasi muutaman tärkeän heiton. Puolustuksessa Jani Lindqvist pääsi useasti antamaan painetta Fisherille ja takakentällä Toni Hartikainen pelasi jälleen hyvän pelin. Bell teki näyttävimmän suorituksen hyökkäyksessä, mutta ehti puolustuksessa lyömään pari palloa irti laitahyökkääjien käsistä.

Royalsin ykkössankari oli luonnollisesti viisi maalia tehnyt Justin Williams. Ihan pelkkiin maalipeleihin Williamsin onnistuminen ei kuitenkaan jäänyt, sillä keskushyökkääjä eteni juosten 126 jaardia ja oli lisäksi joukkueensa ykköskiinniottaja keräten kuudella kopilla 80 jaardia.

Royals eteni ottelussa Steelersiä enemmän (375–343), mikä johtuu osaksi siitä, että Steelersin ei maaleja tehdäkseen tarvinnut edetä enempää. Iso jaardi määrä kertoo myös siitä, että Fisherin heittopeli toimi torstaina paremmin kuin yhdessäkään kauden aiemmassa pelissä., Williamsin lisäksi Jussi Kaas, Stacey Thomas, Denny John sekä nuorisokaartiin lukeutuva Roni Viinamäki ottivat valtasosan kiinniotoista. Jerome Valbon loukkaantui ja joutui jättämään ottelun kesken.

Puolustuksen puolella kaksikko Steeven Tresfield – Stacey Thomas oli jälleen Royalsille hyvä. Tresfield keräsi 11 taklausta ja Thomas 10. Denny John onnistui kulmapuolustajana Johannes Jauhiaista vastaan.

Neljäs peliviikko alkaa mielenkiintoisella kamppailulla, kun Kuopio Steelers (1–0) saa vieraakseen Wasa Royalsin (1–2). Ottelu on kautta aikain ensimmäinen Kuopiossa pelattava Vaahteraliiga-ottelu.

Joukkueilla on takanaan varsin erilainen kauden avaus. Steelers kävi avauskierroksella hakemassa pisteet Tampereelta kaatamalla Saintsin 29–35. Royals puolestaan valmistautuu jo kauden neljänteen otteluunsa. Roosters ja Butchers iskivät ensin vaasalaiset nurin, mutta viikonlopun Botnia Bowlissa Royals kaatoi Crocodilesin ja osoitti muutenkin nousujohteista pelaamista.

Mikä on Steelersin todellinen iskukyky?

Kuopiolaiset pelasivat kelvollisen kauden avauksen – totta kai, kun voitto irtosi ja kun vastassa oli vahvistunut Saints-miehistö. Seth Peters ja Charles Wort olivat erinomaisia hyökkäyksessä ja puolustuksessa puolestaan sekä takakenttä että linja pystyivät vastaamaan Saintsin heittomyllytykseen.

Avausottelu jätti kuitenkin myös kysymyksiä, joista suurin koskee hyökkäyksen tasaisuutta. Steelers jäi kolmen neljänneksen ajan pisteittä ja teki kaikki pisteensä hurjan toisen neljänneksen aikana. Toki avausneljänneksellä Justin Bellin maaliin asti edennyt aloituspotkunpalautus liputettiin pois ja Wort hölmöili varman maalin rähmäykseksi, mutta varsinkin toiselle puoliajalla Steelersin hyökkääminen hyytyi.

Petersin heittopelissä Wortin lisäksi Petteri Vilpponen näytti jo avauksessa osaamistaan ja nyt myös mahdollisesti maajoukkuelaituri Johannes Jauhiainen pääsee peliin mukaan, mikä lisää kiinniottovoimaa radikaalisti.

Petteri Vilpponen teki Saintsia vastaan touchdownin Seth Petersin heitosta:

Steelersin juoksupeli perustuu kolmeen vaihtoehtoon. Perusyksikkönä palloa kantaa Aku Uotila, jonka edessä blokkaava keskushyökkääjä Ville Lindsten raivaa linjan ohessa tilaa. Lisäksi Peters on hyvä liikkumaan ja juoksee varsinkin laidoilta, jos puolustus jättää portin auki. Kolmantena skenaariona Steelers voi käyttää Bell-kortin ja asettaa pikakiitäjä Justin Bellin juoksemaan.

Royalsin heittopuolustuksen tämänhetkinen taso selviää torstaina. Kahdessa edellisessä ottelussa sitä ei ole kummemmin testattu, mutta helatorstaina Roosters pommitti Royalsin takakentän riekaleiksi. Kurtis Ovesen ja Rufail Khalifa lukittautuvat laidoilla omiin pelaajiinsa, mutta esimerkiksi Jauhiaista vastaan koordinaattori Arthur Tolliverin on keksittävä uusia lääkkeitä. Blitzaamalla ja vahvalla linjapelillä on Royals on viimepeleissä saanut painetta vastustajan pelinrakentajalle, joten linjataistelu on mielenkiintoinen seuraamisen kohde torstaina. Nyt Royalsilta todennäköisesti on sivussa linjasta Martti Kass, mutta Lauri Hannula ja konkari Thomas Ceken on jo kahdestaankin hankalasti pysäytettävä kaksikko.

Onko Royalsin hyökkäys kunnossa?

Juoksupeli oli valttia, kun Royals lauantaina avasi pistetilinsä. Justin Williams rynni pallon kanssa 8,5 jaardin keskiarvolla 188 jaardia ja teki kaksi touchdownia. Erityisesti 71-jaardinen leiskautus osoitti, mihin Williams parhaimmillaan pystyy. On kuitenkin hyvä pitää mielessä, että puoliajalla Royals johti vain 6–0 eikä hyökkäys suinkaan juhlinut koko ottelua. Merkkejä piristymisestä silti nähtiin.

Williamsin ohessa Isaac Fisher on vaarallinen, kolhuja kaihtamaton juoksija ja lisäksi Tom Suoste yllättää puolustajia lähes aina kun saa pelivälineen käsiinsä. Oma lukunsa Royalsin juoksupelissä on tiivis, voimakas muodostelma, jolla vaasalaiset hakevat jaardeja erityisesti maalialueen läheisyydessä.

Royalsin heittopelin aseet tiedetään: torniosaston vastaanottajat eli Jussi Kaas ja Jerrah Young ovat ulottuvia uhkia laidoilla. Ja jyräosaston vastaanottaja Jerome Velbon puolestaan on ollut esillä jokaisessa pelaamassaan ottelussa ja onnistui Crocodilesia vastaan myös maalinteossa. Denny John oli edellisessä ottelussa kulmapuolustajana, mutta mikäli ruotsalainen nyt palaa hyökkäykseen, on hänen kyvyilleen hiljalleen löydyttävä myös käyttöä. Sen verran vaisu John kahdessa ensimmäisessä ottelussa hyökkääjänä oli. Silloin ei toki Royalsin heittopeli muutenkaan toiminut.

Steelersin puolustus oli avauksessa lähtökohtaisesti 3-3-5 –muotissa, mutta nyt vastassa on sisempi laitahyökkääjä ja voimakkaampi juoksupeli, joten koordinaattori Andy Bezaire varmasti siirtää puolustajia lähemmäs aloituslinjaa. Saksalaissafety Alex Borgmannin liittyminen Steelersin mahdollistaa Donavan Haydenin muuntumisen tukimieheksi ja Hayden onkin nopeudellaan haastavin blokattava Royalsin linjalle. Puolustuslinja pelasi Jani Lindqvistin johdolla hyvin Saintsia vastaan ja mikäli Steelers saa torstaina mukaan myös Felix N´Twan, muuttuu etulinja entistä tehokkaammaksi.

Takakentällä Santeri Inkinen ottanee paikkansa laitahyökkääjä Jussi Kaasia vastaan ja tuo parivaljakko muodostaakin yhden ottelun parhaimmista kaksintaisteluista. Bell puolestaan kannattaa huomioida varsinkin silloin, jos Royalsilla on kolmannella yrityksellään matkaa uusiin enemmän kuin seitsemän jaardia. Silloin Fisher todennäköisesti hakee pidempää heittoa ja niissä tilanteissa Bell on parhaimmillaan.

Kuopiossa on tällä hetkellä buumi päällä. Mikään tuskin olisi parempi lahja fanaattiselle kotiyleisölle kuin voittaa viime kauden finalisti ensimmäisessä ”Vänärin” ottelussa. Vastaavasti mikään ei olisi Royalsin heikosti alkaneelle kaudelle parempaa kuin napata toinen peräkkäinen voitto pitkän pelimatkan päästä. Tästä tulee mielenkiintoinen taistelu!
