Kaikkien aikojen 42. amerikkalaisen jalkapallon SM-finaalissa kohtaavat runkosarjan ykkönen Kuopio Steelers ja kakkonen Helsinki Roosters. Molemmat raivasivat tiensä Lahden Stadionilla pelattavaan Vaahteramalja XLII otteluun ylivoimaisin välieräesityksin.

Sunnuntain Vaahteramalja on pitkästä aikaan loppuottelu, jossa ei ole selkeää ennakkosuosikkia. Finalistit ovat kohdanneet toisensa kahdesti aikaisemmin Maljassa, mutta kumpaisellakin kerralla Helsinki Roosters on lähtenyt peliin selkeältä etumatkalta. Nyt etumatka on ajettu kiinni ja kuopiolaiset valmistautuvat kolmanteen kohtaamiseen kultamitalinkiilto silmissään. Joukkueiden ainoan runkosarjakohtaamisen voitti vieraskentällä Steelers lukemin 32-35 (18-14)

Steelers sai vastaansa välieräpeliinsä runkosarjassa neljänneksi yltäneen Seinäjoki Crocodilesin. Yli 600 jaardia ottelussa edennyt Steelers voitti pelin 52-14 (28-7).

Roostersin ja Butchersin edellinen runkosarjakohtaaminen oli tiukka taistelu, mutta välieräkohtaamisessa helsinkiläiset eivät antaneet armoa sarjakolmoselle.  Roostersin ylivoimaiset voittolukemat olivat 49-7 (21-0).

Steelers on jyrännyt tasaisesti läpi kauden

Hallitseva mestari Steelers on pelannut vakuuttavan kauden. Runosarjassa joukkue on jyrännyt rutiininomaisesti voitosta voittoon. Runkosarjan kahdeksassa pelissä ainoastaan sarjanousija United Newland Crusaders onnistui yllättämään Robert Johnsonin johdolla kuopiolaiset. Peli oli tosin Steelersille runkosarjan viimeinen, eikä sillä ollut merkitystä sarjan sijoituksille.

Steelersin peleissä suurimman huomion on saanut yhdysvaltalainen keskushyökkääjä Le’Anthony Reasnover, joka on näyttävillä juoksuillaan kerännyt joukkueelleen 1252 jaardia ja 15 touchdownia.  Tasan vuosi sitten Vaahteramaljan MVP-palkinto luovutettiin Steelersin Lamar Carswelille joka oli sateessa pelatun loppuottelun paras etenijä. Sunnuntaina selviää tuleeko Reasnoverista Carswellin manttelinperijä.

Steelers-pelinrakentaja Joey Bradley on pelannut hyvän kauden, mutta tasokkaan hyökkäyslinjan suojissa ja erinomaisten pallollisten kollegojen ympäröimänä pelinrakentajan ei ole ollut tarvetta lähteä ratkaisemaan pelejä henkilökohtaisilla huippusuorituksilla. Bradley kertoi välieräpelin jälkeisessä haastattelussaan, että aiammin hän ei ole pitänyt tilanteista, joissa kovat kontaktit ovat väistämättömiä: Iän myötä iskuihin on totuttu ja mies saattaa väläyttää Lahdessa enemmäkin omilla juoksuillaan.

Steelersin puolustuksessa huomio kannattaa kiinnittää pelaaja numero kahdeksaan. Maurice Wright Jr #8 on kiliseisesti sanottuna yksi kovimmista Vaahteraliigassa koskaan pelanneista tukimiehistä. Wright Jr on noussut peleissä paremmin esille sivuroolissaan goal line-pelien keskushyökkääjänä, mutta 49 kertaa runkosarjassa taklannut yhdysvaltalainen on se pelaaja, jolle lankeaa sunnuntaina Roostersin keskushyökkääjien pysäyttämien.

Steelers on päässyt valmistautumaan otteluun parhaista lähtökohdista. Viime kauden mestarina joukkue sai viimeiselle sarjakierrokselle lepovuoron. Runkosarjan voittajana kuopiolaiset saivat valita myös jatko-ohjelman mieluisakseen ja välieräpelin ajankohdan valinnassa päävalmentaja Pekka Utriainen varmistikin sen, että kuopiolaisilla on pisin mahdollinen palautumisaika ennen sunnuntain loppuottelua.  Kuopio Steelers on valmis kauden huipentumaa  ja tulee marssittamaan Lahden Stadionin nurmelle parhaan mahdollisen kokoonpanonsa. Poissaolijoiden ja epävarmojen lista on joukkueen onneksi lyhyt.

Roosters peliin haastajana

Kaikkien aikojen suomalainen jenkkifutisjoukkue Roosters lähtee peliin haastajan paikalta. Helsinkiläiset haluavat palata takaisin mestaruuskantaan ja ennen kautta liigavalmentajien tekemissä veikkauksissa Roosters asetettiin koko sarjan ennakkosuosikiksi. Joukkueen pelin tason vaihtelevuus sekä tappio finalistien keskinäisessä kamppailussa eivät kuitenkaan nosta Roostersia Vaahteramaljan ennakkosuosikiksi. Tuota asemaa ei ole ennen peliä tarjolla kumpaisellekaan joukkueelle.

Roosters on kierrättänyt kauden aikana laajaa pelaajarinkiä sarjapeleissään ja se on näkynyt tuloksissa pelin tason aaltoiluna. Laajalle rosterille annettu pelikokemus tulee kuitenkin tarpeeseen, koska toisin kuin Steelersilla, Roostersilla poissaolojoiden tai epävarmojen pelaajien lista on pitkä juuri kauden tärkeimmällä hetkellä. Aloituskokoonpanoon normaalisti kuuluvista miehistä varmoja poissaolijoita ovat Arttu Pajarinen (WR) sekä Niko Kuikka (DB).  Epävarmoiksi listattuina ovat Karri Pajarinen (RB), Akseli Olin (DB) sekä Johannes Jauhiainen (WR).  Myös näyttävästi Vaahteraliigaan saapunut laitahyökkääjä Willem Kajander on merkitty pelin poissaolijoiden listalle.

Vaahteramaljan käynnistyessä kannattaa katsoa onko Roostersin keskushyökkääjä #24 pukeissa. EM-välieräpelissä loukkaantunut Karri Pajarinen on sarjan paras kotimainen keskushyökkääjä ja myös oman joukkueensa ehdoton juoksijoiden ykkösnimi. Jos Pajarinen on pelikunnossa, muuttuu Roosterin hyökkäystyyli todennäköisesti juoksupainotteiseksi. Joukkueen yhdysvaltalaiskeskushyökkääjän Andrecus Lindley ja Mike Gentili eivät pelityyliltään Pajarisen kaltaisia suurten pelien tekijöitä, vaikka kelpo jaardeja ovat nakuttaneetkin peleissä.

Tasoaan ehkä eniten kauden aikana parantanut Roosters-hyökkääjä on Micky Kyei.  Kesken kautta mukaan hypännyt laituri on ottanut paikan joukkueensa selkeänä Miro Kadmiryn heittojen kakkoskiinniottajana ja kykenee pallolliseen peliin tiukoissakin tilanteissa puolustajien keskellä.  Viime kaudelle Kyei oli ottavana osapuolena Vaahteramaljassa Wolverines-paidassa kuopiolaisten juhliessa Lahden Stadionilla. Nyt mies haluaa varmasti revanssin.

Roosters puolustus on täynnä nimekkäitä ratkaisijoita, joista erityisesti Viljo Lempinen on ollut liekeissä kauden lopulla. Myös Roni Salonen on pelannut vahvan kauden ja tulee saamaan isoa roolia Steelersin Bradleyn ja Reasnoverin ahdistelussa.  Liigan ylivoimaisesti kovimman juoksuhyökkäyksen pysäyttäminen vaatii kukonpoikien puolustukselta kauden parhaan pelin.

Vaahteramalja XLII pelataan sunnuntaina 12.9. Lahden Stadionilla.  Peli potkaistaan käyntiin 14.00 ja stadionin portit avataan klo 13.00.  Ottelu tarjoillaan suorana lähetyksenä Ruutu+ kanavalla ja tunnin mittainen Vaahteramaljastudio käynnisty kanavalla jo 13.00.
