Royals - Butchers 23.07.2021

Porvoo Butchers ja pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris pelasivat vahvan pelin Vaasassa. Kauden toistaiseksi runsasmaalisimmassa pelissä Butchers kukisti Wasa Royalsin lukemin 27-49 (13-40).

Ottelun alku muistutti paljon vuoden takaista peliä, jossa Butchers karkasi Kaarlen kentällä aluksi 7-28 johtoon. Perjantai-iltana porvoolaiset ottivat nopeasti 0-27 johdon, mutta Royals kuittasi nopeasti kahdella heittomaalilla ja kiri tilanteeksi 13-27. Toisin kuin vuosi sitten pelatussa pelissä, Butchers ei päästänyt isäntäjoukkuetta lähemmäs vaan kaasutti selvään voittoon pelissä.

Jabari Harris heitti 412 jaardia

Ottelun hahmo oli Butchersin pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris, joka ylsi Vaasassa yhteen Suomen uransa huikeimmista peleistä. Royals todennäköisesti keskittyi pysäyttämään juoksevaa pelinrakentajaa, mutta kohtasi kentällä Harrisin, joka heitti 75 % osumatarkkuudella kauden ylivoimaisesti kovimmat jaardilukemat 412. Porvoon laitureista onnistuvat parhaiten heittokuvioihin juossut keskushyökkääjä Sean McAllen (158y) sekä Marcus Siiskonen (112y). Monet Harrisin onnistumiset syntyivät rikkonaisista peleistä, joissa nopeajalkainen pelinrakentaja onnistui irtautumaan ahdistelijoistaan ja oman juoksun sijaan heitti pallon laitureilleen.

Porvoo osoitti, että sen hyökkäyksestä löytyy tulivoimaa siitä huolimatta, että ykkösnyrkiksi värvätty RJ Long ei loukkaantuneena jatka kauttaan. McAllenin ja Siiskosen ohella palloa heitettiin yhteensä seitsemälle laiturille onnistuneesti. Playoff-peleihin matkalla oleva Butchers on kuitenkin täydentämässä hyökkäyksensä rosteria jo seuraavaan peliin. Vieraspeli Vaasassa oli kanadalaiselle laiturille Brandon Ihanzalle karanteenipeli ja mies tullaan näkemään kentällä Butchersin kohdatessa Steelersin kahden viikon päästä Kuopiossa.

Royals onnistui maalinteossa neljästi

Wasa Royals on ennen perjantaita onnistunut touchdownin tekemisessä ainoastaan kolme kertaa. Nyt maalisaldo enemmän kuin tuplaantui. Pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner oli jälleen kerran joukkueen kaikki kaikessa edeten itse juosten 55 jaardia ja heitäen komeat neljä touchdownia ja 301 jaardia. Vaasalaisten maalintekijöinä olivat Tommy Kaczocha sekä Jan Hochschild, jotka kumpainenkin onnistuivat kahdesti.

Royals jatkaa kovia taistelujaan varsin kapealla rosterilla. Perjantain kotipeliin joukkue kirjasi 28 pelaajan nimet.

Botnia Bowl-kiertokirnun viikko sitten haltuunsa kaapannut Wasa Royals saa perjantaina vieraita Porvoosta. Vahvasti kahdella voitolla kautensa aloittanut Butchers haluaa katkaista kahden ottelun mittaisen tappioputkensa.

Perjantain vaahteraliigapelissä on panoksena enemmän kuin kaksi sarjapistettä. Wasa Royals sekoitti sarjan keskikastia Crocodiles-voitollaan ja omaa edelleen hienoiset mahdollisuudet pudotuspeleihin. Voitto Porvoosta nostaisi joukkueen mahdollisuuksia merkittävästi ja sysäisi samalla Butchersin pakkovoittojen tielle. Porvoolaisia pidettiin alkukauden näyttöjen perusteella varteenotettavana playoff-kandidaattina. Kaksi perättäistä Roosters-tappiota ovat kuitenkin hiljentäneet äänekkäimmät kannattajat jännittämään tosissaan Vaasan pelin tulosta.

Royals taistelee kovalla asenteella

Wasa Royals on ensimmäinen joukkue, joka saa kaikki kauden kotikentällä pelattavat runkosarjapelit täyteen. Jos paikka pudotuspeleissä jää haaveeksi, on perjantaina viimeinen mahdollisuus seurata Vaahteraliigaa Kaarlen kentällä.

Royalsin alkukausi oli vaikea eikä joukkueen hyökkäyspeli tuntunut avautuvan millään virityksellä päävalmentaja John Bookerin odottamaan muotoon. Voitto Seinäjoella toi kuninkaan miehille annoksen itseluottamusta, mutta edelleen Royalsin tehtyjen pisteiden sarake on liigan vaatimattomin. Neljän pelin jälkeen 25 pistettä kertoo hyökkäyksen tehottomuudesta.

Botnia Bowl-voitossa Royals-hyökkäyksen tehokkain etenijä oli pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner, joka juoksi pallon kanssa 108 jaardin matkan. Aiempina vuosina kanuunankuula-lisänimen itselleen hankkinut Tom Suoste sai tililleen ainoastaan yhdeksän jaardia ja on merkitty perjantain peliin nuoren Nico Barrow´n backup-pelaajaksi. Päävalmentaja Booker kertoo seuran verkkosivulla eväistä, joilla uskoo perjantaina kukistavansa vierailevan Butchersin:

-Butchers on erittäin hyvä joukkue. Heillä on vaarallinen pelinrakentaja ja aggressiivinen hyökkäys. On tärkeää, että meidän hyökkäyksemme löytää rytmin juoksupelissä. Meidän täytyy pystyä pitämään hyökkäyksiämme käynnissä juoksun kautta.

-Puolustuksessa meidän täytyy pitää heidän keskushyökkääjänsä kurissa samaan tapaan, kun teimme Crocodilesiakin vastaan sekä pelata heidän pelinrakentajansa juoksu pois. Peli on molemmille joukkueille kriittinen kauden kannalta, joka varmasti näkyy pelissä henkiselle puolella.

Butchers keskittynyt peliin kaksi viikkoa

Porvoon Butchers on saanut keskittyä Royalsin kohtaamiseen kahden viikon ajan. Kaksi Roosters-tappiota on ehditty karistaa harteilta ja joukkue on taas valmis kartuttamaan pistetiliään.

Butchers on menettänyt rosteristaan ykköslaituriksi värvätyn RJ Longin, mutta Mikko Seppänen, Marcus Siiskonen sekä hyvin myös heittokuvioihin etenevä keskushyökkääjä Sean Mc Allen takaavat sen, että Royals ei voi keskittyä vain juoksupelin pysäyttämiseen. Butchersin juoksupeli ei ole kaudella ollut yksinomaan pelinrakentaja Jabari Harrisin varassa. McAllen on väläytellyt nopeuttaan ajoin ja johtaa Harrisia juostuissa jaardeissa 231-216.

Porvoolaisten puolustuksen ykköstykki on kauden neljässä ensimmäisessä pelissä ollut vuonna 2001 syntynyt Timi Nuikka. Nuikka on kirjannut alkukauden peleissä tililleen 29,5 taklausta, joka on koko liigan paras lukema. Myös jenkkitukimies Alvin Reels sekä säkkispesialisti Jesse Vuoksenturja ovat olleet isossa roolissa vastustajan juoksun pysäyttämisessä.

Butchers-puolustuksen tilastollisesti heikoin osa-alue on toistaiseksi ollut heiton puolustaminen. Joukkue on liigan heittopuolustustilaston hännillä päästettyään vastustajaa etenemään keskimäärin yli 200 jaardia heitoilla per ottelu. Aivan kädettömänä Butchers-takakenttä ei ole kuitenkaan ollut peleissään. Porvoolaiset takakenttäpelaajat ovat napanneet yhteensä kahdeksan syötönkatkoa, jotka jakaantuvat tasaisesti peräti seitsemälle eri pelaajalle. Kahdeksalla syötönkatkolla Butchers pitää tuossa tilastosarakkeessa sarjan kärkipaikkaa.

Joukkueet kohtasivat kaudella 2020 kertaalleen. Kaarlen kentällä pelatussa vaiherikkaassa avauskierroksen kamppailussa Royals oli parempi lukemin 39 – 28.
