Roosters–Butchers 28.05.2018

Helsinki Roosters teki maanantaina lopulta sen, mitä moni hallitsevalta mestarilta odottikin: iski taululle lähes 40 pistettä ja karkasi vastustajalta jo taukoon mennessä. Alussa hyvin puolustanut Porvoo Butchers joutui taipumaan Velodromin maanantai-illassa lukemin 49–13 (35–7).

– Vähän hyökkäyksellä oli käynnistymisvaikeuksia Butchersin puolustuksen liikkeitä vastaan, mutta lopulta se sieltä niin sanotusti löysi uomansa, kommentoi Roostersin päävalmentaja Juha Hakala ottelun jälkeen. – Pääsimme ainakin harjoittelemaan lentopotkuja tällä kertaa.

– Puolustuksessa meillä oli tavoitteena sulkea juoksu pois, missä onnistuimme hyvin erityisesti siihen nähden, että Janne Rautiainen, Lasse Kankaanpää ja Edward Vesterinen olivat kokoonpanosta pois. Puolustuksen ansiolistaan voidaan vielä lisätä kaksi pallonriistoa rähmäyksistä ja yksi syötönkatkosta.

Ottelun avausosuma:

 

Butchersin puolustus tosiaan tuli otteluun ahnaasti ja aggressiivisesti. Kaksi ensimmäistä hyökkäysvuoroa päättyivät kotijoukkueen osalta kummallakin kertaa jo kolmen yrityksen jälkeen. Roosters-hyökkäyksen käynnistäjänä toimi veljespari Brandon Connette – Adam Connette. Brandon Connette heitti ottelussa kuusi touchdownia, joista neljä Adamille. Kaiken kaikkiaan Adam Connette keräsi ottelussa 13 kiinniottoa, joilla hän vei palloa eteenpäin 212 jaardia. Lisäksi Kimi Linnainmaa ja Tommi Pinta tekivät Roostersille yhdet touchdownit Brandon Connetten heitoista ja yhden maalin viimeisteli Karri Pajarinen juosten.

Ensimmäisellä puoliajalla Roosters osui viisi kertaa, joista Adam Connetten aivan puoliajan viimehetkillä tekemä touchdown nosti Roostersin 35–7 -taukojohtoon. Toisella puoliajalla kotijoukkue rauhoitti tahtiaan, eikä voitto ollut enää missään vaiheessa uhattuna.

Roostersin puolustuksessa Niko Kuikka taklasi vahvasti ja otti myös yhden syötönkatkon. Vaihdosta kentälle tullut Ilya Redin puolestaan käytti paikkansa hyvin kooten joukkueensa toiseksi suurimman taklausmäärän. Hyvin pelasi linjan keskustassa myös Heikki Lesonen. Toisella puoliajalla Roosters kierrätti erityisesti puolustuksessa runsaasti pelaajia, ja moni nuori peluri pääsi aistimaan Vaahteraliiga-ottelun tunnelmaa kentälle.

Butchersin heittopelissä piristymisen merkkejä

Butchersin päävalmentaja Jimi Roiko oli tyytyväinen siihen, että Roostersin juoksupeli pysyi porvoolaisten hallussa. Kotijoukkueen juoksukeskiarvo oli kolme jaardia per yritys, mikä oli noin puolet pienempi kuin Butchersin vastaava lukema.

– Joo, ja olen tyytyväinen erityisesti siksi, että loukkaantumisten vuoksi meillä oli tukimiehen paikalla takamiestä ja puolustuksen linjamiestä.

Sebastian Karbin puuttui Butchersin puolustuksesta tukimiesosastolta. Ja takamiehenä puolestaan nyt pelasi brittihyökkääjä Isaak Marshall, jonka epäkiitolliseksi tehtäväksi jäi varjostaa Adam Connettea. Roman Runner ja Mitch Dalley pitivät omat miehet hyvin vartioituna, mutta Roostersin levittäessä peliä laajalle, ei jenkkikaksikkokaan ehtinyt auttamaan muita heittopuolustajia.

Darion Hall oli porvoolaisten ykkösetenijä maanantaina, vaikka yhdysvaltalainen ei maalia tehnytkään. Sen sijaan pelinrakentaja Janne Lehtinen juoksi ensimmäisen Butchers-osuman. Toisesta vierasjoukkueen maalista vastasi laitahyökkääjä Roman Runner, joka teki 31-jaardisen touchdownin Lehtisen heitosta.

– Meillä on edelleen tekemistä hyökkäyksemme kanssa, Roiko kommentoi. – Esimerkiksi alussa saimme hyviä lähtöpaikkoja. Niistä pitäisi Roostersin tasoista joukkuetta vastaan saada onnistumisia. Tai muuten käy kuten tänään kävi.

Connette Brothers

Butchersin puolustuksen koordinaattori Bill Moore totesi puoliajalla, että jos Butchers alkaa puolustamaan Adam Connettea tarkemmin, niin sitten joku muu nousee esille. Juuri siten Brandon Connetten johtama hyökkäys toimii. Alkukaudesta suurin tähti on ollut Kimi Linnainmaa, nyt onnistuja oli Adam ja seuraavassa ottelussa estradi saattaa aueta jollekin toiselle. Adam Connetten (13 kiinniottoa, 212 jaardia, 4 touchdownia) käsistä kulki yli puolet Roostersin heittojaardeista (22 onnistunutta heittoa, 307 jaardia, 6 touchdownia). Brandon Connette on nyt kahdessa pelaamassaan ottelussa heittänyt 10 touchdownia eikä yhtään syötönkatkoa.

Curtis Slater

Mister Slater oli jälleen kaikkialla. Puolusti oman tonttinsa Roosters-takakentällä kliinisesti ja keräsi kentän suurimman taklausmäärän, 7 pysäytystä. Näistä taklauksista iso osa syntyi erikoispeleissä, joissa Slater näytti myös pallonkantajan kykyjään pohjustamalla lentopotkun palautuksella Pajarisen touchdownin.

Markus Haapasaari

Nuori, lupaava laitahyökkääjä nosti profiiliaan Butchers-hyökkäyksessä ja esitti otteita, joiden myötä Haapasaari  saattaa hyvinkin nousta aloitukseen porvooalaisten seuraavassa ottelussa. Haapasaari on pelannut yhdessä pelinrakentaja Lehtisen kanssa jo aiemmin Wolverinesissa, ja tuon yhteisen kokemuksen myötä Haapasaari tulee vielä väläyttämään enemmänkin osaamistaan.

Ville Kurvinen

Butchersin puolustus sai rakennettua ajoittain hyvin painetta Brandon Connettelle ja kolme kertaa porvoolaiset onnistuivat Roosters-pelinrakentajan myös säkittämään. Kurviselle kirjattiin yksi säkitys, vaikka veteraani oli pahanteossa useamman muunkin kerran. Erityisesti räjähtävä lähtönopeus takaa sen, että Kurvinen pääsee kiertämään heittopelissä blokkaajansa ja ehtii juoksupeleissä mukaan myös vastakkaiseen suuntaan juoksevien pallonkantajien liikkeisiin.

Vaahteraliigan kolmannen peliviikon toinen ottelu pelataan maanantaina Velodromilla Helsingissä, kun Porvoo Butchers (1-0) haastaa Roostersin (1-0). Molemmat joukkueet avasivat kautensa voitolla Wasa Royalsista. Hyvän kevään pelannut Roosters lähtee kotiotteluunsa ennakkosuosikkina, mutta Butchersilla on omat iskunpaikkansa.

Terävä Roosters-heitto

Roostersin peli oli Royalsia vastaan varsin tehokasta ensimmäisellä puoliajalla, jolloin joukkue ykkösmiehistöään käytti. Kimi Linnainmaa, Alexander Wasiljeff ja Adam Connette tekivät jokainen maalit Brandon Connetten heitoista – Linnainmaa kahdesti. Lisäksi Henri Jussila iski juoksupelistä kaksi osumaa. Nyt myös iso kohde eli huhtikuun lopulla Roostersiin siirtynyt Tommi Pinta on saanut jälleen harjoitella lisää koordinaattori Mikko Koikkalaisen hyökkäystä ja Pinta onkin Butchersin lyhyemmille kulmapuolustajille haastava pysäytettävä.

Porvoolaisten yhdysvaltalaisvahvistuksilta eli Roman Runnerilta ja Mitch Dalleylta vaaditaan erinomaista ottelua, jotta Butchers saisi Kukonpoikien hyökkäystä hidastettua ja pysäytettyä. Onkin mielenkiintoista nähdä miten koordinaattori Bill Moore jenkkikaksikkonsa ryhmittää – Vaasassa viikko sitten Runner ja Dalley pelasivat ajoittain kulmapuolustajina, mutta Dalley pelasi runsaasti myös safetyn paikalla.

Roostersin juoksupeliä vastaan porvoolaisista isossa roolissa on Sebastian Karbin ja lisäksi puolustuksen linjan on pystyttävä pitämään jalansijansa hyvän vireen löytänyttä Roostersin hyökkäyslinjaa vastaan.

Brandon Connette yllättää viikoittain omilla juoksuillaan niin tehokkaasti, ettei niiden pitäisi enää yllättää. Silti oletettavaa on, että mikäli Butchersin puolustus erehtyy jättämään laidan auki, juoksee Connette myös maanantaina ainakin pari kertaa uusiin yrityksiin. Ville Kurvinen oli edellisessä ottelussa Butchersin näkyvin linjapuolustaja. Hän on tärkein pelaaja antamaan painetta heittopelissä Connettelle.

Vyöryvä Butchers-juoksu

Butchersin hyökkäyksessä katseet kohdistuvat keskushyökkääjiin Darion Hall ja Sebastian Lindell sekä Arttu Tennbergin johtamaan hyökkäyksen linjaan. Royalsia vastaan Butchers juoksi hyvällä keskiarvolla ja teki kolme touchdownia maata pitkin. Hall on Roostersin puolustuksen kohde numero yksi, mutta Butchers osaa käyttää jenkkijuoksijaansa myös tehokkaasti syöttinä. Tästä syystä paikkoja aukeaa myös Lindellille.

Butchersilla on erinomainen linjan oikea laita sentteri Tennbergin, guard Jari Monosen ja tackle Pasi Lautalan muodossa, mutta vastassa oleva Roostersin linja on luunkova kauttaaltaan. Keskellä Heikki Lesonen ja Janne Rautiainen ovat kuuluneet alkukauden suurimpien onnistujien joukkoon ja laidoilla Okko Outinen ja Toni Ahonen pelaavat ottelusta toiseen erinomaisesti. Juoksua vastaan tukimies Sami Toivonen on kenties koko Suomen niemen paras. Kokenut porvoolaislähtöinen Santtu Äyräväinen sekä lupaava Akseli Vartiainen vartioivat Outisen ja Ahosen kanssa, ettei Hall pääse karkaamaan laidoille.

Porvoolaisten heittopeli ei vielä Vaasassa vakuuttanut, ja nyt koordinaattori Pekka Piminäisellä ja pelinrakentaja Janne Lehtisellä on ollut viikko aikaa hioa ajoituksia kuntoon ja laajentaa pelisuunnitelmaa. Todennäköisesti nyt nähdään enemmän lyhyitä kuvioita ja erityisesti Mikko Seppäsen roolin soisi kasvavan. Daniel Luoma sen sijaan näytti jo avauksessa olevansa tänä vuonna entistä merkittävämpi heittokohde. Vahva juoksu tietysti antaa mahdollisuuksia rakentaa heittopeliä, mutta jälleen katseet kääntyvät hyökkäyksen linjaan, jonka luotava Lehtiselle aikaa ja rauhaa rakentaa peliä.

Roostersin takakentällä mielenkiintoinen seurattava on viikosta toiseen Curtis Slater. Jenkkisafety on pallohaukka heittoa vastaan, mutta iskee nopeasti myös juoksua vastaan. Royals-ottelussa Niko Kuikka pelasi toisena safetyna ja vahvana taklaajana Kuikka voisi istua myös tässä ottelussa Roostersin puolustuksen koordinaattori Kalle Karppisen pelisuunnitelmaan.

 

Mistä muodostuu Butchersin mahdollisuus?

Hyökkäys on paras puolustus Butchersille. Mikäli heittopeli nousee nyt uskottavaksi pelotteeksi laidoille, laajenee myös juoksun elintila. Pallonmenetyksiin ei ole varaa ja myös esimerkiksi yksikin kiinnipitorangaistus saattaa kaataa kokonaisen hyökkäysvuoron. Kolmas kliseinen, mutta aina ajankohtainen tae Butchersin mahdollisuuksille on erikoisjoukkueiden onnistuminen. Janne Lehtinen on potkinut hyviä lentopotkuja ja maajoukkuepotkaisija Joni-Petteri Malka huolehtii siitä, että Butchersilla on pistesauma myös kauempaa maalialueesta. Roosters-palauttaja Slaterin kanssa porvoolaisten on oltava tarkkana, sillä Slater voi koska tahansa räjäyttää pankin.

Roostersin hyökkäys on tehnyt jokaisessa kevään ottelussa yli 40 pistettä – Royalsia vastaan tuo raja rikkoutui jo avauspuoliajalla. Kapellimestari B. Connette on ollut kevään aikana suorastaan ilmiömäinen ja muun muassa Linnainmaa on iskenyt kaikissa otteluissaan kaksi maalia. Lisäksi koordinaattori Koikkalaisella on takataskussaan edelleen melkoinen määrä uusi vaihtoehtoja, sillä esimerkiksi Royalsia vastaan hänen ei tarvinnut käyttää kuin pelikirjansa johdanto-osaa.

Butchersin on onnistuttava 1 vs 1 –puolustamisessa laidoilla, mikä on nopeaa Roosters-hyökkääjistöä vastaan on haastava tehtävä, vaikka Butchersilla käytössään kaksi hyvää jenkkipuolustajaa onkin. Emmanuel Amudeng ei ole tällä kaudella Butchers-paidassa vielä pelannut, mutta nyt jos koskaan Amudeng olisi tervetullut lisä takakentälle. Juoksupelissä taklausvarmuus korostuu ja edelleen porvoolaisten pidettävä mielessä myös Brandon Connetten omat juoksut.
