Crusaders - Royals 13.08.2021

Vaahteraliigan Friday the 13th jumbofinaalissa sarjanousija United Newland Crusaders saavutti historiansa ensimmäisen voiton korkeimmalla sarjatasolla. Rajusti taistellut Wasa Royals kaatui Harjun kentällä lukemin 28-24 (15-14).

Kohtalokkaan perjantaipelin lähtökohta oli selvä ainakin kotijoukkueelle. Tappio Vaasalaisille olisi merkinnyt varmaa jumbosijaa Vaahteraliigassa jäljellä olevien pelien tuloksista riippumatta. Käänteisesti Royals olisi varmistanut sarjataulukon turvallisen kuudennen sijan voitolla, mutta tappiokaan ei merkitse joukkueelle varmaa jumbosijaa. Royalsin oljenkorreksi jää kauden viimeinen peli sarjakakkosta Roostersia vastaan.

Perjantai-illan taistelu oli odotetun tiukka, jossa molemmat ylsivät huikeisiin huippusuorituksiin, mutta myös dramaattisiin epäonnistumisiin. Ottelun lopullinen ratkaisu oli Crusadersin tukimies Michael Hallin ottama syötönkatko omalla 21 jaardin viivalla, kun pelikellossa oli aikaa jäljellä 1.49

Crusaders peliin all-in-mentaliteetilla

Sarjanousija Crusaders lähti ratkaisupeliin merkittävien rosterimuutosten avittamana. Pelinrakentaja Robert Johnsonille oli hankittu laitureikseen lisää ykköskorin kiinniottajia, jotka osoittautuivat elintärkeiksi illan pelissä. Robertin velipoika Cedrick Johnson tunsi käytetyn Air Raid-pelirytmin vanhasta muististaan ja onnistui yhdeksällä kiinniotollaan keräämään joukkueelleen 93 jaardia etenemistä sekä joukkueensa viimeisen ratkaisevan touchdownin. Toinen tuore yhdysvaltalaisvahvistus Nolan Corpening otti peräti 12 kiinniottoa ja jaardia vaille samat lukemat kuin CJ. Kaikkiaan Robert Johnson keräsi heitoillaan 331 jaardia ja kaikki neljä joukkueen touchdownia.

Nimekkäiden jenkkien hienoista otteista huolimatta ottelun vakuuttavimpana pelaajana palkittiin Crusadersin irlantilaislaituri Finn Kearns. Kearns eteni kiinniotoillaan 107 jaardia ja teki kolme joukkueensa neljästä TD-suorituksesta. Keskushyökkääjä Kameron Harris käytti hyväkseen heittoa puolustaneen Royalsin antama tilan ja keräsi arvokkaita jaardeja voimajuoksuillaan. Kaikkiaan Harrisille 107 jaardia.

Lohjalaispuolustuksen sydän perjantain pelissä oli tukimies Hall. Kahdeksan taklausta, joista kolme aloituslinjan takana sekä kaksi pelinrakentajasäkitystä ja ottelun lopussa otettu intteri olivat erinomainen näyttö liigan taklaustilaston ykkösmieheltä. Puolustuksen linjan päätyyn hankittu tsekki Marek Danik loukkasi jalkansa pelin alussa eikä päässyt mukaan ottelun ratkaisuhetkille.

Crusaders ei päässyt ottelussa helpolla ja kaksi pallonmenetystä pahoissa paikoissa olisivat voineet osoittautua kohtalokkaammiksi. Tuomarin nostaessa pallon päänsä päälle Crusadersin piste-ero Royalsiin oli neljä pistettä. Crusadersin pisteistä ne neljä potkaissut Kari Grönroos ei voinut peitellä innostustaan omassa Ruutu-haastattelussaan.

Royalsin taistelu ei tuonut joukkueen toivomaa tulosta

Wasa Royals lähti otteluun ennakkoasetelmien mukaan altavastaajana kuten käytännössä kaikkiin muihinkin kauden pelihin. Lähtökohdista huolimatta vaasalaiset tarjoilivat jälleen kerran hienon taistelun, joka olisi voinut päättyä toisinkin. Joukkueen kohtaloksi muodostuivat neljä pallonmenetystä, joista viimeinen katkaisi hyvin edenneen hyökkäysdraivin alle kaksi minuuttia ennen loppua.

33 miehen rosterilla Lohjalle saapuneen vaasalaisjoukkueen avainpelaajat urakoivat läpi pelin kahteen suuntaan. Tommy Kaczocha keräsi jälleen joukkueensa suurimman kiinniottomäärän ja ehti puolustuksessa taklaamaan kolmesti sekä nappaamaan toisen joukkueensa syötönkatkoista. Hyvän pelin pelasi myös keskushyökkääjä Nico Barrow, jolle 61 juoksujaardia, 58 kiinniottojaardia ja 3,5 taklausta.

Joukkueensa näkyvin pelaaja oli jälleen kerran pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner. 301 heittojaardia sekä juosten tehty touchdown eivät torstaina riittäneet voittoon saakka.

Royalsin potkaisija Markkus Pylkkönen otti Crusadersin Grönroosin ennen peliä heittämän haasteen vastaan ja oli pelin aikana vahvasti eri mieltä siitä, kummalla joukkueista oli ottelussa potkaisijan etu. Pylkkönen potkaisi kaikki kolme lisäpistettä haarukkaan ja onnistui kolmen pisteen kenttäpotkumaalissaan. Pisteiden valossa Pylkkönen nokitti Grönroosin pelissä pistein 6-4.

Ottelun jälkeisessä haastattelussa Royalsin taisteluilmeen henkilöitymä, pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner oli ymmärrettävästi pettynyt ottelun lopputulokseen, mutta ylpeys joukkueensa taisteluilmeestä oli silmin nähtävää Ruutu-haastattelussa.

Voitollaan Crusaders otti tiukan otteen sarjapaikasta. Joukkueella on vielä kaksi peliä pelaamatta (Steelers, Butchers) ja se kykenee kartuttamaan pistepussiaan voittaessaan jatkon vastustajansa. Royalsille jumbosijan välttäminen edellyttää voiton ottamista Helsinki Roostersista viikon päästä pelattavassa vieraspelissä ja Crusadersin tappioita lopuista lohjalaisten peleistä. Kumpikaan joukkue ei pysty nousemaan enää kuudetta sijaa ylemmäs sarjataulukossa.

Perjantaina 13.8. pelataan Lohjalla kauden toistaiseksi merkityksellisin ottelu. Sarjataulukossa kahdella alimmalla paikalla olevat United Newland Crusaders ja Wasa Royals kohtaavat toisensa kauden ainoassa keskinäisessä pelissä ja panoksena on sarjapaikka Vaahteraliigassa.

Kauden 2021 jokaisella sarjapelillä on suuri merkitys. Pandemian takia kahdeksaan otteluun tiivistetyssä runkosarjassa korjausliikkeisiin ei ole mahdollisuutta erityisesti pelattaessa niitä joukkueita vastaan, jotka kohdataan sarjassa vain kertaalleen. Perjantain pelissä on kyse tällaisesta taistelusta. Crusaders ja Royals ovat totisen paikan edessä perjantaina.

Crusaders lähtee perjantain peliin ehkäpä kauden vahvimmalla rosterillaan. Seura on kauden edetessä ja putoamispeikon häämöttäessä värvännyt rosteriinsa vahvistuksia, joiden tuella joukkueen tulivoima kasvaa molemmin puolin palloa. Joukkueen viidestä pelistä neljä on päättynyt yhden maalin marginaalilla vastustajalle. Tähän halutaan selvästi muutos Lohjalla.

Royals on pelannut läpi kauden sarjan ohuimmalla rosterilla, eikä perjantain peliin ole odotettavissa yllättäviä vahvistuksia. Useita nuoria pelaajia avauskokoonpanoonsa laittava joukkue on taistellut hyvin läpi kauden, mutta ainoastaan paikallispelissä Crocodilesia vastaan taistelu on tuottanut sarjapisteitä.

Johnsonin veljekset jälleen yhdessä

Crusaders esittelee kotiyleisölleen perjantaina kolme uutta ykköskorin vahvistusta. Suomalaisille tutun Cedric Johnsonin (WR) lisäksi miehistöön liittyvät yhdysvaltalainen laituri Nolan Corpening (WR) sekä tsekkiläinen Danek Marik (DE). Cedric Johnson ja Corpening tuovat pelinrakentaja Robert Johnsonin nopealle Air Raid-hyökkäykselle lisää taitavia käsiä heittojen kohteiksi joukkueen ykköslaituri Finn Kearnsin rinnalle. Kun nelikkoon lisätään keskushyökkääjä Kam Harris, voidaan lohjalaisten hyökkäyksen tulivoimaa pitää vähintään riittävänä vaahteraliigapelin voittamiseksi. Johnsonin pelinrakentajaveljekset ovat pelanneet yhdessä aiemmin Helsinki Wolverinesin riveissä ja odotettavissa saattaa olla yllättäviä ratkaisuja, jotka perustuvat veljesten kemiaan.

Jo hetki sitten Crusaders puolustusta vahvistamaan värvättiin nuori unkarilainen Zoltan Golita. Nyt puolustuksen etulinjaan värvätty tsekki Danek Marik tuo linjapeliin nopeutta ja voimaan eikä laituri Corpeningin käyttö puolustuksessa ole ainakaan jenkkikiintiöiden näkökulmasta mahdotonta. Crusaders on ilmoittanut perjantain peliin aiemmin takapuolustajana toimineen Golitan tukimiehen paikalle. LB-trio Golita, Michael Hall, Daniel Szatmari valmistautuvat pysäyttämään Royalsin heittopainotteista hyökkäystä.

Crusaders päävalmentaja Tuomas Heikkinen tiivistää pelin luonteen seuran otteluennakossa näin:

–Kausi katkolla. Molemmilla. Panokset ovat tietty kovat. Nyt täytyy vaan uskoa, että kesän mittaan on jo kovetuttu joukkueena sen verran että voittaminen onnistuu. Seinäjoella oli jo merkkejä näkyvissä. Pitää haluta ja uskoa. Muu on vain taktiikkaa jne.

Potkaisijalegenda palaa kentälle

Crusadersin todellinen yllätyskortti perjantain peliin on potkaisijalegenda Kari Grönroosin paluu Vaahteraliigakentille. 53-vuotias Gronroos pelasi 90-luvulla (!) NFL Europen edeltäjä World League of American Footballin The Scottish Claymores-joukkueen potkaisijana. 16 kertaa maajoukkuepaidan päälleen pukenut konkari ottaa joukkueensa vanhimman pelaajan tittelin ”vain” 50-vuotiaalta Jason Thomasilta. Grönroosilla on hallussaan yhä voimassa oleva Suomen ennätys kenttäpotkumaalin mitassa. Hän potkaisi 54 jaardin pituisen potkumaalin 25 vuotta sitten 1996 Vaahteramaljassa.

Löytyykö Bookerin kikkakassista uusia yllätyksiä

Wasa Royalsin päävalmentaja John Booker on onnistunut venyttämään kapeasta pelaajamateriaalistaan miehekkäitä taisteluita välillä ylivoimaisiakin vastustajia vastaan. Nuori joukkue joutuu perjantaina Lohjalle kauden kovimman paikan eteen. Pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner on onnistunut taikomaan otteluissaan huikeita yksilösuorituksia ja löytyy joukkueensa juoksutilastosta ylivoimaiselta kärkipaikalta. Myös nuori maajoukkueessakin esiintynyt Nico Barrow on esittänyt peleissään lupaavia otteita, mutta viime kauden Aplha Jallohin kaltaista suurten pelien miestä joukkueesta ei tällä kaudella löydy.

Booker esitteli joukkueensa viimeisessä pelissä Wolverinesia vastaan tukun uusia pelejä, jotka eivät kuitenkaan tule enää yllättämään vastustajia. Löytyykö päävalmentajan pelikirjasta lisää yllätyksiä, joilla vastustajan kokenut valmennus voidaan yllättää voittoon saakka? Tämän näemme perjantaina. Valmentaja suhtautuu tilanteeseen rauhallisesti ja kertoo seuran otteluennakossa joukkueen valmistautuvan peliin kuten kaikkiin muihinkin – tavoitteena on voittaa:

– Ottelun paineet eivät merkitse mitään. Me pyrimme voittamaan jokaisen pelin yrittäen samalla tavalla. Joukkueet putoavat ja nousevat sen perusteella, miten ne ovat kentällä esiintyneet. Se on rehellistä ja jos meidän parhaamme ei ole riittävän hyvä voittoon, silloin se on totuus.
