Crocodiles - Butchers 29.08.2020

Crocodilesin ja Butchersin runkosarjakohtaaminen ei herättänyt suuria tunteita kentällä eikä yleisössä. Ottelun merkityksettömyys näkyi otteissa ja kuului katsomossa. Voitto Crocoille lukemin 42-6.

Kotijoukkue Crocodiles on varmistanut välieräpaikkansa sekä lopullisen runkosarjasijoituksensa ennen viimeistä peliään. Crocodiles, Wolverines ja Royals keräsivät kaikki kolme voittoa ja kaksi tappiota. Royals sijoittui kolmikosta ylimmäksi voitettuaan kummankin kilpailijansa keskinäisissä kohtaamisissa ja Crocodilesin neljännen sijan sinetöi avausottelun tappio Wolverinesille.

Lauantain pelissä liigan toistaiseksi heikoin heittohyökkäys intoutui takomaan Spencer Cutlanin johdolla 284 heittojaardia ja kaksi touchdownia. Molemmat heittomaalit syntyivät Nathaniel Robitaillen kiinniotoilla, joista jälkimmäinen oli kauden pisimmän jaardimäärän takaa tehty touchdown (94 jaardia). Joukkueen juoksukone Christian Powell keräsi pelissä 165 jaardia ja kolme touchdownia. Myös Veikka Lehtonen pelasi vaihteeksi pallollisena aiempia pelejä enemmän edeten lähes 20 jaardin keskiarvolla kolmella kannollaan.

Crocodiles puolustuksessa varmistettiin aluksi se, että Jabari Harris ei pääse tapansa mukaan nakuttamaan jaardeja ja maaleja pelin alkuun. Kun tilanne ja johtoasema vakiintui, pääsi seinäjokisten valmennus kierrättämään kentällä nuoria lupauksiaan. Joukkueen parhaana puolustuspelaajana palkittiin Veeti Kallio, joka pääsi säkittämään vastustajan pelirakentajan kahdesti aloituslinjan takana.

Butchersin kausi päättyi lauantaina

Butchers ei yltänyt voittoon kauden viimeisessä pelissä. Joukkue pyrki pelaamaa heittopainotteista hyökkäystä totutun juoksun sijaan. Takuuvarma laituri Mikko Seppänen koppasi Harrisin heittoja kiinni 11 kertaa, eteni 150 jaardia ja teki joukkueensa ainoan maalin yhdellä kiinniotoistaan. Crocodiles-puolustus oli merkannut Jabari Harrisin erityisvartiointiin eikä amerikkalainen onnistunut juoksemaan pallon kanssa odotusten mukaisesti. Harrisin juoksujaardit painuivat ottelun päättyessä pakkasen puolelle lukemiin -12.

Butchers saapui Seinäjoelle kapealla rosterilla useampien avauskokoonpanon pelaajien ollessa poissa kokoonpanosta. Porvoo lähti kauteen pääosin oman kylän poikien joukkueella, eikä rosterissa ollut kauden aikana yhtään import-pelaajaa. Joukkueen kaikki kolme yhdysvaltalaista pelasivat EU-statuksella. Butchers-puolustuksen ahkerin taklaaja oli takapuolustaja Jere Paananen, joka ottelun loppuhaastattelussa kertoi katseiden olevan jo tulevassa kaudessa.

Vaahteraliigan runkosarjan viimeiseen pelikierrokseen lähdetään paineettomassa tilassa. Seinäjoki Crocodiles on runkosarjan neljäs ja Butchers kuudes päivän ottelutuloksen siihen vaikuttamatta.

Jännittäväksi ennustetun viimeisen liigakierroksen suurimmat paineet purkautuivat jo torstaina Wolverinesin pudottaessa Roostersin laulukuoroon tämän kauden osalta. Perjantaina pelattiin ainoastaan runkosarjan voitosta ja lauantaina enää maineesta ja kunniasta. Butchersin kausi päättyy tänään ja joukkue haluaa varmasti jättää positiivisen muistijäljen tynkäkaudesta itselleen sekä yleisölle. Crocodileslle kamppailu tarjoaa erinomaisen tilaisuuden testata sekä reservejään, että pelikirjan eri variaatioita.

Porvoolaiset ovat pelanneet läpi kauden ainoana joukkueena ilman maahan pelejä varten hankittuja vahvistuksia. Junioreista ja todellisista veteraanipelaajista muodostuva kokoonpano on väläytellyt välillä näyttäviä pelejä, mutta pääosin ne ovat muodostuneet vahvojen yksilösuoritusten tuloksena. Pelinrakentaja Jabari Harrisin atleettisuus on tuonut Butchersille pisteitä ja jaardeja tilanteista, jotka ovat välillä näyttäneet mahdottomilta. Lähinnä voittoa porvoolaiset ovat olleet kauden avauksessaan, jossa he menettivät 21 pisteen johdon vahvan loppukirin ottaneelle Royalsille.

Kauden neljässä aiemmassa pelissä Butchers on tehnyt yhteensä 12 touchdownia, joista seitsemän on syntynyt pelinrakentaja Harrisin juoksuista. Heittomaaleista kaksi on kirjattu Mikko Seppäselle ja kolme Kristian Natuselle. Puolustuksen ahkerin taklaaja on ollut tapapuolustaja Timi Nuikka 17 taklauksellaan. Nuikka on kirjannut nimiinsä myös Butchersin ainoan kaudella kopatun syötönkatkon.

Porvoolaiset lähtevät kauden viimeiseen peliinsä tiiviillä 26 pelaajan rosterilla. Mm. hyökkäyslinjan keskellä pelaava Arttu Tennberg ei pelaa lauantaina Seinäjoella.

Crocodiles valmistautuu pudotuspeleihin

Perjantaina varmistui, että seinäjokiset tulevat pelaamaan välieräpelissään Kuopio Steelersia vastaan Väinölänniemellä lauantaina 5. syyskuuta. Joukkueet kohtasivat aiemmin viikko sitten Crocodiles vieden pelin yllättäen 14-7. Sanotaan sadekelin vaikuttaneet tulokseen, mutta seinäjokiset voittivat ottelun pelattuaan kentällä paremmin kuin vastustajansa. Nyt lauantain pelissä Crocodilesin suurena haasteena tulee olemaan hyvän vireen ylläpitäminen ennalta heikompana pidettyä vastustajaa kohdatessaan.

Crocodilesin Christian Powell johtaa Vaahteraliigan juoksutilastoa 638 jaardillaan. (Tilaston kakkosena Jabari Harris 486 jaardilla). Maaleja yhdysvaltalainen on kirjannut saman verran kuin Harris, eli seitsemän. Heittohyökkäykseltään seinäjokiset ovat liigan hännillä ja tämä tulee olemaan joukkueen akilleenkantapää jatkon ratkaisupeleissä. Spencer Cutlanin heitoilla Cricodiles on edennyt ainoastaan 104 jaardin ottelukeskiarvolla, kun vastaava luku toiseksi heikoimmin suoriutuneella Butchersilla on 130. Lauantai-iltapäivän peli tarjoaa Crocoille mahdollisuuden hioa heittoajoituksiaan kuntoon riskittä.

Jabari Harrisin juoksua vastaan Crocodilesilla on asettaa liigan taklaustilaston kuninkaan, Jaska Värisen (29 taklausta). Steelers-pelissä mukaan kokoonpanoon tullut ranskalainen Ander Roulette osoittautui hyväksi värväyksesi oltuaan voittopelissä joukkueensa paras taklaaja. Myös Veikka Lehtonen on pelannut vahvasti tukimiehen paikallaan.

Crocodiles lähtee otteluun selvänä ennakkosuosikkina. Liigakausi 2020 on ollut ennätyksellisen yllätyksellinen ja tänäänkin saatamme nähdä kentällä jotain, mitä ennakkoasetelmien mukaan kukaan ei osannut odottaa.
