Butchers–Royals 23.08.2018

Kuukauden ottelutauolta palannut Royals kaatoi Porvoon Butchersin 21-7 (7-0) ottelussa, jossa panoksena oli liigan kolmossija. Heikosti kautensa aloittanut viime kauden hopeajoukkue kohtaa välierissä runkosarjan kakkosen Kuopion Steelersin. Porvoolaisten runkosarja päättyi torstain otteluun, ja Butchers joutuu vielä jännittämään nouseeko Steelers ohi ja nelossijalle.

Ottelusta muodostui kotijoukkueelle haastava heti alkumetreillä. Toisella hyökkäysvuorolla pelinrakentaja Janne Lehtinen sai taklaustilanteessa iskun päähänsä ja joutui jättämään ottelun kesken. Myös liigan juoksutilaston ykkönen ja puolustuksessakin suureen rooliin kaavailtu Darion Hall loukkaantui ottelun alkuvaiheessa eikä palannut kentälle.

Lehtisen loukkaantumisen jälkeen Butchers siirsi maajoukkuelaitahyökkääjä Mikko Seppäsen pelinrakentajaksi. Seppänen teki useita pelejä nopeudellaan ja urheilullisuudellaan, mutta harjoittelun puute näkyi.

— En ole treenannut pelinrakentajana oikeastaan lainkaan, joitakin downeja scoutissa, Seppänen kertoi Ruudun haastattelussa ottelun jälkeen. Seppäsellä on toki kokemusta pelinrakentajana pelaamisesta juniorivuosiltaan ja aiemmilta tuurauskeikoiltaan miesten peleissä.

Porvoolaisten puolustus sai pidettyä kotijoukkueen pelissä mukana kahden neljänneksen verran. Ensimmäisen puoliajan ainoaksi pistesuoritukseksi jäi Nicholas Petersonin 65 jaardin kiinniotto-TD Royalsin koko ottelun ensimmäisellä hyökkäysdownilla.

Justin Williams matkasi kotimaahansa

Toisella puoliajalla Royalsin hyökkäys paransi otteitaan, ja nousi Tom Suosteen kahdella juoksutouchdownilla 21-0-johtoon. Etenkin Suosteen ensimmäisessä, lähietäisyydeltä juostussa maalissa vaasalaisten hyökkäyksen linja dominoi aloituslinjaa ja Suoste pääsi painamaan maalialueelle helposti. Suoste sai juoksupelissä normaalia enemmän vastuuta, koska yhdysvaltalaiskeskushyökkääjä Justin Williams on jo palannut kotimaahansa. Ottelun lopulla nuori keskushyökkääjä Nico Barrow pääsi esittelemään fyysistä juoksutyyliään.

Suosteen ensimmäinen TD:

— Ensimmäisellä puoliajalla emme saaneet peliämme käyntiin. Puoliajalla puhuimme, että pitää vain rauhoittua ja pelata niin hyvin kuin pystymme, Royalsin pelinrakentaja Isaac Fisher sanoi ottelun jälkeen.

Butchersin hyökkäys joutui siis loukkaantumisten takia improvisoimaan ja peluuttamaan miehiä vieraammilla pelipaikoilla. Kotijoukkue pääsi muutamaan otteeseen pisteidentekoetäisyyksille, mutta Royalsin Lauri Saari nappasi kahdesti syötönkatkon lähellä omaa maalia. Lisäksi Butchersin maajoukkuepotkaisija Joni-Petteri Malka epäonnistui potkumaaliyrityksessä kahdesti. Hienosti kauden aloittanut Malka on nyt missannut neljä perättäistä potkumaaliyritystään Vaahteraliigassa.

Butchers kavensi päätösneljänneksellä lukemiksi 7-21 Mitch Dalleyn pitkällä keskushyökkääjän heitolla Daniel Luomalle. Royalsin pallonmenetyksen myötä Butchers pääsi vielä hakemaan lisäkavennusta neljännen neljänneksen lopulla, mutta kikkapelikavalkadi ei tuottanut tulosta.

Luoman touchdown:

Royals kohtaa vielä runkosarjan päätösottelussa 2.9. Roostersin.

Noustakseen Butchersin ohi Saintsin pitää voittaa ensi viikon torstaina Steelers. Pelkkä voitto lauantain ottelusta Crocodilesia vastaan ei riitä tamperelaisille, sillä tasapisteissä Saintsin pitää yltää Butchersia parempaan vastustajien voittoprosenttiin. Muut tie-breakerina käytettävät kohdat menevät tasan.

Janne Lehtinen naurahtaa epäuskoisesti kysyttäessä kommenttia Butchersin kaudesta 2018.

— Vaikea ja tahmea kausi. Monella osa-alueella on ollut vastoinkäymisiä, ja loukkaantumiset ovat tehneet sen että treenaaminen kärsii, maajoukkuepelinrakentaja kertaa.

Loukkaantumissuman lisäksi porvoolaisten kauteen on mahtunut hyökkäyksen koordinaattorin potkut sekä liigan viime kausien jenkkivahvistusten eliittiin kuuluneen monitoimimies Roman Runnerin kypäränheittoepisodi ja siitä napsahtanut ennätyspitkä pelikielto. Kaikesta tästä huolimatta Butchers on vielä kiinni pudotuspelipaikassa. Kolme ottelua yhdeksästä voittaneen Butchersin runkosarja päättyy torstaina kotiotteluun Royalsia vastaan. Vaasalaiset ovat sarjataulukossa kolmantena eli pykälää Butchersia korkeammalla. Takana vaanii vielä kaksi voittoa kahdeksasta ottanut Saints, jolla on myöskin vielä mahdollisuutensa nousta pudotuspeleihin.

Liigan heittotilastoista Lehtisen nimi löytyy häntäpäästä. Tilillä on viisi heitettyä touchdownia, 11 syötönkatkoa ja 123 heittojaardia per peli.

— Aika samat sanat kuin koko joukkueen osalta, Lehtinen arvioi omaa kauttaan.

— Viime matsissa alkoi jo löytyä se identiteetti. Maajoukkueen hyökkäyksessä oli kyllä kotoisampi olo kuin Butchersissa alkukaudella, Lehtinen myöntää.

— Onhan tässä systeemit muuttuneet Robert Johnsonin hyökkäyksestä, Lehtinen viittaa kahteen edelliseen kauteensa Helsingin Wolverinesissa.

Henki parantui muutosten myötä

Butchersin hyökkäyksen johdossa tapahtui muutos maajoukkuetauolla, kun hyökkäyksen koordinaattori Pekka Piminäinen sai potkut ja päävalmentaja Jimi Roiko otti hyökkäyksen pelien kutsumisen omalle vastuulleen. Ensimmäisessä pelissä maajoukkuetauon jälkeen Butchers-hyökkäys jäi nollille ja tuloksena oli 0-51-kuritus Steelersiltä. Viime torstaina Butchers puristi arvokkaan 22-20-voiton Saintsista.

Lehtisen mukaan pelikirjaa ei pistetty kokonaan uusiksi. Hän kuvaa muutoksia enemmänkin aiemman viilaamiseksi.

— Pelikutsumme ovat nyt monipuolisempia. Aiemmin vastustajat tiesivät että jos olimme gunissa niin heitimme ja jos olimme I:ssä niin juoksimme. Positiiviseen suuntaan on menty, ja henki on parantunut muutoseten myötä, kun olemme joutuneet heräämään tähän tilanteeseen.

Lehtinen lähti koti-EM-kisoihin Suomen aloittavana pelinrakentajana, mutta kisojen toisessa ottelussa Ranskaa vastaan pelinrakentajan paikalle vaihdettiin Miro Kadmiry. Hän johti Suomen EM-pronssille kisojen päätöspäivänä, ja Lehtinen seurasi ottelua sivurajalta.

— En ole kisoihini täysin tyytyväinen, mutta valmennan itsekin joten ymmärrän valmennuksen tekemän ratkaisun. Pronssi maistui helvetin hyvälle, se on minullekin ensimmäinen arvokisamitali aikuisten tasolla, Lehtinen sanoo.

Ensimmäisen kerran Roosters-kasvatti pelasi Vaahteraliigassa aloittavana pelinrakentajana jo 19-vuotiaana, kaudella 2009. Päällä oli silloin Wolverinesin peliasu.

— Nyt osaa asioita enemmän. Silloin oli kyllä välillä aika hukassa, Lehtinen myöntää. Tuon kauden ja kauden 2018 väliin Lehtisellä mahtuu mm. kausia Pohjois-Amerikassa sekä edelliset kaksi kautta ykkösdivisioonassa.

”Royalsin puolustus ottanut kehitysaskeleita”

Torstain ottelussa panoksena on runkosarjan kolmas sija, ja Steelersin kohtaaminen välierissä Roostersin sijaan. Voitto Butchersista varmistaisi Royalsille kolmossijan ilman jossitteluja. Butchers varmistaisi voitolla vähintäänkin paikan pudotuspeleihin ja myös kolmossijan lukuun ottamatta tilannetta jossa Royals kaataisi päätösottelussaan Roostersin tai Saints voittaa molemmat jäljellä olevat ottelunsa (Crocodiles ja Steelers) ja Royals häviää Roostersille. Royalsille tappiokaan ei tietäisi pudotuspelihaaveiden menetystä. Siinä tapauksessa playoffeihin nousu tosin vaatisi Roostersin kaatamista päätöskierroksella.

Butchers voitti joukkueiden ensimmäisen kohtaamisen toukokuussa Vaasassa 36-13.

— Samalla suunnitelmalla lähdetään kuin Tamperetta vastaan. Royalsin puolustus on ottanut paljon kehitysaskeleita alkukauden jälkeen. Meillä taas suunta on ehkä ollut toiseen suuntaan, mutta positiivisilla fiiliksillä lähdetään, Lehtinen toteaa. Teurastajat voittivat kaksi ensimmäisestä kolmesta ottelustaan, mutta valahtivat sitten viiden ottelun mittaiseen tappioputkeen.

Porvoolaiset ovat joutuneet enenevässä määrin peluuttamaan pelaajiaan kahteen suuntaan kauden edetessä. Torstaina tarkkailussa on jälleen liigan juoksutilaston ykkösen Darion Hallin peluutus. Saintsia vastaan hän pelasi ottelun alussa ainoastaan kulmapuolustajana.

— Pyrimme pitämään avainpelaajiemme jalat tuoreina. Saints-pelissä riippui puolustuksen draivien pituudesta miten käytimme Hallia hyökkäyksessä, Lehtinen avaa joukkueen peluutusta. Ratkaisu toimi, sillä Hall jaksoi painaa tärkeitä jaardeja hyökkäyksessä myöhemmin ottelun kuluessa.
